When St. Louis musicians move to one of the coasts, it's usually to further their careers. But when singer-songwriter Chloe Day made the move in 1995 to Los Angeles- she now lives in - it was for the warmer weather. It wasn't until she got out there that she developed her interest in music.

"I didn't play music then," says Day. "My roommate got a guitar, and I always wanted to learn and never had the opportunity. After she had her guitar for a month, she learned 'Amazing Grace' from a book and showed it to me. I didn't understand the concept of chords on the guitar, but she taught me three chords, and from there you can write any song you like."

Day has advanced considerably since then. Although her sophomore CD, "Pixie Runway," also includes St. Louis guitarists Jay Summers and Drew Acree, Day's guitar-playing is featured all over the disc.

The CD follows last year's "The Return Of …," and Day says there are marked differences between her two releases. "I have much more playful songs this time around," says Day, who returned home this week to promote her CD, which was recorded at the St. Louishome of Nathan Williamson. "I had much more fun with this one.

"This album is a lot poppier than the last one, though that wasn't a conscious choice. And it feels much more cohesive. I paid a lot of attention to how one song flows into the next. You want it to flow. You want to tell a story on the album."

As for her show tonight at Blueberry Hill, she says, "Every concert is different. I don't know if all performers think that way. You never know what your strongest songs will be or what will flop."
