:Dark insinuation BY CARMA NIBARGER Chloe Day, Form 30, Pharmakon Birdy’s Bar and Grill Wednesday, Dec. 27, 8:30 p.m. It’s that time again — after Christmas and between the new year. After family get-togethers, office parties and all that eggnog, the blank days on your calendar can feel like a big let down. It’s the post-Christmas slump when you want to do something, but have nothing to do — nothing fun anyway. As luck would have it, this time, there actually is something. Smack dab between the holidays, Chloe Day will perform at Birdy’s on Wednesday, Dec. 27. A trip-hop artist from Venice Beach, Calif., Day is on tour promoting her latest album, Pixie Runway. The gig will stand as her first Indianapolis performance and promises to be a beautiful show, capitalizing on Birdy’s twin stage screens to showcase her motion-video art and her signature blend of acoustic and electronica. While Day may look and sound like a pixie, with her long hair, wide eyes and flirty, airy vocals, her music is rife with dark insinuation. In her song “Catnip,” she sings, “He’s got murder in his plans. / She’s got murder at her hands. / Mmm, he took that bait again.” Day sprinkles her fairy dust music on her listeners’ ears, but instead of delivering them the happily-ever-after of Neverland, she brazenly takes them to the more tarnished alleys of love. Catchy and lingering, Day has a unique layered sound. Her use of visual imagery and acoustic elements is reminiscent of ’90s band Belly, and Day’s strong electronic aspect sounds similar to Jem. By inflecting her work with lines of jazz pop and porch swing folk, and by telling eerie stories of lust, betrayal and guilt, Day creates an enchanting body of music that is something else altogether.
